Scholarship Mentor Program - we are looking for more volunteers!
In 2024, the Whitefish Education Foundation launched a pilot program, training volunteer mentors to support seniors in finding college scholarships.
We offered weekly sessions for students to meet with one of our mentors to research, organize, and facilitate scholarship applications.
Over the past two years, a total of 74 different students have been awarded scholarships at our awards ceremony in May of each year.
We are hoping to increase our reach and scope in 2026/7 by working with as many seniors as possible and tailoring our support to those most in need.
Help us meet this goal by volunteering to be a mentor and attend our next training session!
We are looking for volunteers for the 2026-2027 Scholarship Mentor Program
NO EXPERIENCE IN SCHOLARSHIP RESEARCH IS REQUIRED
We ask that you attend our brief training session:
- Location: Whitefish High School District Office (Boardroom)
- Date & time: Thursday, October 8th 2026, 5.30-7pm
- What to bring: Laptop/tablet (if you have one) and something to make notes

At this training you will:
- Meet members of the WEF scholarship team and WHS staff, learn more about the program and hear how rewarding it has been for current volunteers
- Get an introduction to the online resources we use to help students and have a chance to navigate them for yourselves
- Get the chance to ask any questions and meet other like-minded volunteers!
FAQs
What does the Scholarship Mentor role entail?
Being passionate about listening and connecting with students, basic tech skills and having a willingness to learn our preferred online search tools is all you need to be an impactful volunteer!
Our mentors typically work with students 1:1 to find out more about their post-graduation plans, extra-curricular activities and personal situation and then identify which scholarship opportunities would be the best fit for them.
When you first start mentoring with us, we will pair you up with an experienced volunteer to shadow, until you feel comfortable to work independently.
At times, we also assist in providing a greater level of support such as reviewing application materials or conducting specialized scholarship searches for particular students.
Who do we help?
Under the guidance of Whitefish High School counselors, we assist seniors who attend both the main and independent high schools in Whitefish.
Most of our students are simply looking for help in organizing their approach and understanding the available resources.
When do you meet?
This year we will meet in the high school on Monday afternoons (2.25-3.30pm) and Friday mornings (9.50am-10.40am) and mentors are asked to bring a laptop/tablet (if they have one) for online searches.
I can’t volunteer during school hours. How else can I help?
In addition to mentors meeting students on campus, we are also in need of people who can help (from home!) to research new and existing scholarships, as well as conduct outreach within the Whitefish community for new scholarships.
Time spent can be at your discretion. Training is provided as well!
